Anyone know what those table looking monuments are for? I am sure my UK followers do :)
They are from the grave robbing days (Burke & Hare operated out of Edinburgh....not too far away LOL) this heavy slab on top of pillars made it nearly impossible to rob the grave.
I have see my share of cemeteries and I have to say there were a lot of these that were still intact. In some cemeteries people have stolen them for decoration :(

The bell that used to be in this tower is in a museum in town. along with some of the better pieces of stained glass. Sadly when we were there you could see that some people had thrown things through the windows.....seriously what kind of idiot destroys 200 year old stained glass windows! They now have this mesh and fencing over all the windows, very ugly, but unfortunately necessary.
Finally, here is a picture of the lovely Dairsie castle....it is even more beautiful on the inside. More pictures to follow.
While I don't ever condone taking things from graveyards/churches and such, I'd really love to have a grave-table! Imagine the look on the family's faces when you tell them where the table they are eating on, came from? *Snicker...*

You mention the ugly window screens on the church. Unfortunately, its become a fact of life in the U.K. that everything from public buildings to telephone boxes have to be nailed down/titanium covered etc.. to prevent theft and vandalism.

Great photos! And interesting background about the slabs and pillars. My first knowledge of Burke and Hare (and their ilk) came years ago during an evening ghost walk through old Edinburgh. Those stories have a way of lingering in one's mind. :D
